Your favorite feline will be feeling fine!
66How to keep your cat happy!
To help keep our furry friends happy, safe and healthy there are some simple things we humans can do that will satisfy even the most finicky feline.
The Cat Box
Cats in general are clean animals, and really do prefer a clean litter box. Some might consider cleaning the cat box the worst job ever! It's not rocket science, make sure you scoop the cat box each and every day and make sure there is enough litter for the next visit. Change out all the litter at least once a month along with cleaning the entire cat box. Not only is it good for your cat it is good for the humans that live in the house as well. I bet both humans and felines will even thank you for it from time to time. There are many types of cat litter to choose from. They basically all do the same thing one way or the other. Just be sure to follow the specific brand instructions, as well as many different kinds of cat boxes you can choose from. I would suggest one with a cover for the most privacy. Do you want to be watched when you go to the bathroom? Also, look for a litter ramp for the front of the cat box. As the cat goes in and out of the cat box, litter from time to time tracks in and out and this tray will collect the spillage and keep it from tracking all over the house. Most important of all, if you are pregnant, if at all possible do not change the cat box. Have someone else do it. If there is no one else that can change the cat box, wear rubber gloves along with a medical mask. When done, wash your hands right away! Cat feces can carry a parasite that causes toxoplasmosis, and pregnant women are at particular risk. It's also not recommended for young children to change the cat box, for safety and health reasons.
Trimming Claws
Trimming claws is not and should not be "the scariest time" for you OR your cat! I suggest wrapping the cat in a towel to clip the claws if the cat is against it. Trimming your cats claws will make not only the cats feel more at home but the humans in the home as well knowing they are less likely to be scratched. Also as a bonus your furniture thanks you for keeping your cats nails trimmed. There are many tools out in the world to use to trim your cats nails from regular animal nail cutters to even a dremel . Ask your vet for what is the best way to trim your cats nails. Also there are many different kinds of cat scratchers and scratching posts that will help with your cats claws.
Brush That Cat
Brushing your cat is not only relaxing for you, it is even more fun for your feline companion. Brushing your cat has shown in some studies that it reduces high blood pressure for you and your cat as well. Keeping your cat brushed will keep your cat from looking shaggy, it will also keep a lot of loose cat hair from being all over the furniture in the house and on your clothes. Most important of all if you don't brush your cat on a regular basis be prepared to be cleaning up everyone's favorite thing in the world hairballs.
Cleaners
There are a lot of different kinds of cleaners out in the world we live in. Look for one that is pet safe. A lot of cleaners just mask the smell of urine and feces and never really do clean the spot. To really eliminate the smell of urine and feces you need a cleaner with enzymes. Any good local pet store will have these special cleaners for this duty.
Sanitation
One of the things you need to do is make sure the water and food dishes are cleaned and sanitized every day. To keep your cat from infection, this is very simple to do by putting the cats dishes in the dishwasher and having a back up food and water dish. If you do not have a dishwasher use hot water and a good detergent make sure you rinse the bowls out entirely before they are reused. It is also a good idea to keep the litter box a good deal away from the food and water. If you can try to keep them in two different rooms.
